OJCP Funding & Eligibility

This position is funded through the Ontario Job Creation Partnerships (OJCP) program. To be eligible for this opportunity, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an Ontario resident

  • Currently unemployed or working less than 20 hours per week

  • Actively seeking full-time employment

  • Meet ONE of the following criteria:

    • Currently receiving EI benefits, OR

    • Received EI benefits within the previous 60 months, OR

    • Has paid EI premiums (deductions taken off your pay stub) in at least 3 of the last 10 years

Position Overview

Create imaginative, engaging educational content that brings GrowBuildLearn's Mars  Academy to life. Leveraging AI, You'll edit  stories, activities, scripts, and educational narratives that teach kids about plants, food systems, and sustainability — all set in our Mars Farmer universe. Your focus is on making the learning experience fun, immersive, and unforgettable.

This role is perfect for creative writers, children's content creators, storytellers, or anyone who loves making educational content that kids actually want to engage with.

Key Responsibilities

Creative Content Writing (80%)

  • Write engaging stories, narratives, and scenarios set in the Mars Farmer universe

  • Develop and expand character voices for Francie, Andre, and other Mars Farmer Academy characters

  • Create imaginative activities, challenges, and missions that make learning feel like an adventure

  • Write scripts for educational videos, animations, and interactive experiences

  • Craft compelling descriptions, instructions, and student-facing content

  • Develop creative hooks that capture attention and spark curiosity about plants and sustainability

  • Write content for different age groups (Grades 3-12) with appropriate tone and vocabulary

  • Brainstorm fresh ideas for making STEM topics exciting and accessible

  • Use AI tools to enhance creativity and accelerate content production

Content Development & Iteration (15%)

  • Collaborate with curriculum specialist to ensure content meets educational goals

  • Revise and refine content based on feedback from educators and pilot testing

  • Adapt content for different formats (print, digital, interactive)

  • Observe classroom pilots to see how students respond to your content

  • Iterate on materials to improve engagement and clarity

Supporting Content (5%)

  • Write teacher-facing materials in an accessible, friendly tone

  • Create supplementary content for newsletters, social media, and marketing

  • Contribute creative ideas to broader GBL content strategy

Job requirements

Required Qualifications

Experience & Skills

  • 1-3 years experience in creative writing, content writing, children's media, or educational content

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating imaginative, engaging writing

  • Ability to write in different voices and adapt tone for young audiences

  • Excellent storytelling skills — you know how to hook a reader and keep them engaged

  • Creative thinker who brings fresh ideas and isn't afraid to experiment

  • Strong writing fundamentals (grammar, clarity, structure)

  • Self-motivated with ability to manage writing projects independently

Core Competencies

  • Imagination and creativity — this is the #1 thing we're looking for

  • Ability to make complex topics simple and fun

  • Comfort writing for children and young audiences

  • Collaborative spirit — open to feedback and iteration

  • Curiosity about science, nature, plants, and sustainability

  • Comfort with AI writing tools (ChatGPT, Claude) as creative partners

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have, But Not Required!)

  • Experience writing for children's media, educational publishing, or EdTech

  • Background in science communication or making STEM accessible

  • Experience with character development and world-building

  • Familiarity with gamification and interactive storytelling

  • Knowledge of plants, gardening, or environmental topics

  • Experience writing scripts for video or animation

  • Background in education or working with kids

  • Portfolio includes published children's content or educational materials

Work Environment

This role offers significant flexibility for creative work. Write from the GBL office, from home, or wherever you're most creative. Occasional in-person collaboration for brainstorming sessions and classroom observations. Schedule is flexible with focus on deliverables over hours.
